Are You a High-Achieving Anxious Perfectionist?

If you hold yourself to high standards while striving for excellence and are often afraid of not meeting your expectations or making mistakes, you’re most likely a high-achieving anxious perfectionist.

High-achieving anxious perfectionists are driven, goal-oriented high performers. They often take on challenging tasks and are successful in various aspects of life.

Despite their success, high-achieving anxious perfectionists constantly worry about being good enough or the best. They have a deep fear of failure and feel the constant pressure of being perfect.

Perfectionists spend excessive amounts of time on tasks, even if it means sacrificing sleep, relationships or personal time. They are overly critical, hard on themselves, struggle to feel good enough, and find it difficult to relax.

Is Your High-Achieving Perfectionism Getting in Your Way?

Your high-achieving anxious perfectionism may be getting in the way of feeling like your best self and may actually be at the root of your unhappiness.

If your high standards, fear and self-doubt are getting in the way of your happiness, you may benefit from some self-care practices.

Affirmations Can Help Combat Perfectionism

Affirmations are a relatively easy and accessible self-care practice to help work through your perfectionism.

Affirmations are empowering and encouraging statements that can help combat your perfectionism.

These encouraging statements shift your mindset from self-judgement and criticism to self-compassion and acceptance, helping you focus on progress instead of perfection.

Here's a List of 10 Powerful Affirmations to Overcome Perfectionism and Cultivate Self-Acceptance:

1. I am doing the best I can, and that is enough.

2. Progress is more important than perfection.

3. I embrace my imperfections as a part of my unique self.

4. Mistakes are opportunities for growth and learning.

5. I release the need to control every outcome and trust in the process.

6. I am worthy of love and acceptance, regardless of my achievements.

7. I choose to focus on what I have accomplished rather than what I have not.

8. I give myself permission to be imperfect and still deserving of success.

9. I celebrate my efforts and progress, no matter how small.

10. I am enough just as I am.

Practice Makes Progress Not Perfection

I suggest printing out the list and keeping it near by. Practice saying these affirmation out loud throughout the day to get into a habit of shifting your mindset.

If it’s helpful, set a few alarms on your phone as a reminder or tape the list somewhere you will see it throughout the day (e.g., mirror, fridge or computer). This will help you feel more consistent and supported in the practice.

The goal is to make progress in shifting your mindset over time. This is a practice and it's not meant to be perfect. Give yourself grace when it doesn't go exactly the way you think it should.

*Here’s a gentle reminder that taking care of yourself is a practice. It requires patience, consistency, and plenty of self-compassion.

Happy self-empowering!
