Licensed Mental Health Counselor Specializing in Stress and Anxiety Therapy for Women in Minnesota

Hello! I'm Samantha, a licensed mental health counselor specializing in stress and anxiety therapy for high-achieving, high-functioning, and highly sensitive women in Minnesota. I specialize in helping women across the state of Minnesota get unstuck. I know firsthand what it's like to feel stuck in today's fast-paced, ever-changing, overwhelming world, and that's why I'm so passionate about helping women like you.

It's not uncommon for potential clients to want to know what it’s like to work with me before starting therapy. They often want to know what I specialize in, what modalities I use, and how I would approach their concerns. This is a really great way to get to know a therapist before you commit to an initial therapy session, and I always appreciate it when a future client asks.

If you’re interested in my therapeutic services and are curious about how I approach therapy, this blog is for you. Read further to learn more about my specialties, what methods and modalities I use to help my clients, and how I approach therapy.

My Main Therapeutic Specialty: Anxiety

My main specialty is anxiety, specifically generalized anxiety and high-functioning anxiety. Generalized anxiety consists of worry or fear that occurs more days than not and is difficult to control. High-functioning anxiety is when someone suffers from generalized anxiety but does a great job masking it. These individuals tend to appear well-put-together but are often suffering internally. High-functioning anxious individuals tend to be type A perfectionists, people-pleasers, overfunctioners, or procrastinators who overthink, overanalyze, and have a fear of failure or letting others down.

My Additional Specialties: Perfectionism and Self-Esteem

My secondary specialties are perfectionism and low self-esteem, which tend to tie in with anxiety. Perfectionists typically have high standards for themselves and others. With that, they can be highly critical and suffer from low self-esteem. Individuals with low self-esteem often compare themselves to others, over-apologize, and have difficulties saying nice things about themselves. Symptoms of high-functioning anxiety, perfectionism, and low self-esteem tend to overlap one another, which is why I specialize in all three.

Therapeutic Approaches and Techniques: How I Address Your Mental Health Needs

When I’m working with my specialties, I tend to incorporate a few different methods and approaches to help clients overcome their difficulties. The approaches I most commonly use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Compassion-Focused Therapy. These are just therapeutic terms for specific approaches that are commonly used to treat anxiety, perfectionism, and self-esteem.

I incorporate strategies from these approaches, such as building awareness, reframing thoughts, and compassionate self-talk, to help clients feel more confident in managing unhealthy or unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. Ultimately, the goal is to help you feel more in control of how you think, feel, and react, and I use a combination of different approaches and techniques to support you in meeting this goal.

My Therapeutic Approach and Personal Style as a Stress and Anxiety Therapist for Minnesota Women

I often refer to myself as an eclectic therapist. I really believe that each client is unique and that there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I try to meet my clients where they are and build things up from there. This means that some sessions will involve me asking several questions to get to know you and your concerns, while others may involve digging deep and unpacking years' worth of anxiety, perfectionism, or low self-esteem. We may find ourselves tackling recurring themes or patterns such as shame, guilt, or feeling stuck, while some sessions may include psychoeducation or learning new or more helpful ways of managing symptoms.

Often, clients can feel this internal pressure to lead a session or know exactly what they want to talk about, but this doesn’t have to be the case. I honestly love just getting to know you in a super chill and relaxed way. This allows me to gather information so I can guide and build off our sessions. Essentially, you never have to feel pressured to come prepared, but if you feel like you want to have an agenda for your sessions, that’s okay too.
